The praise & worship “movement” has certainly come of age in regards to modern music and recording standards. We have great music, talented musicians and singers, state of the art sound equipment, celebrative services, and a booming music market.
As used here the term “skillful hands” involves the formation and sharpening of our talents (our voices, our instruments, etc.), as well as the art and craft of our singing, playing, and leading.
While these skills can be utilized to make us sound and “look” good outwardly, their highest use is in directing us to the true heart of worship: the presence of God. In the context of a worship setting, our singing and instrumental skills should enhance the musical journey of exalting and honoring God while helping to direct us into His manifest presence. Once His presence comes, the singing and music may not even be needed—at times it may even be a distraction. I encourage instrumentalists to learn to play better so that they can actually play less—so that the focus can be on God’s presence and not their playing.
Scripture certainly encourages us to play skillfully [Psalm 33:3], and we are created in such a way that we respond to skillful singing and music that is pleasing to the ear. While distractions can never fully be eliminated from a worship gathering large or small, we can help prevent needless musical distractions by simply practicing and honing our singing and playing skills!
